Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Psalm 100:1-2 (KJV)

When we think about fasting, we often think about sacrifice and suffering, so it’s naturally difficult to imagine being joyful about ANYTHING, much less making a joyful shout to God during this time. However that’s exactly what we should be doing!

The point of the fast is to bring our flesh under subjection–remember, to empty ourselves out and fill up with the Holy Spirit!–and allow God to have more control in our lives. If we are sacrificing our time and our fleshly desires, and if we are truly allowing God to fill us, our Spirit man will be joyful. It’s in these times when we should be singing God’s praises more!

We learn, too, from 2 Chronicles that praise before the battle can make way for God’s army to fight for us:

After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the LORD and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: “Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures forever.” As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.

2 Chronicles 20:20-22 (NIV)

If you’re fighting or expecting a battle, try praise! Even when it looks like your enemy is about to overtake you, praise! If you feel like life is too much, praise! For the rest of your fast, make it your goal to praise God with a joyful noise no matter the circumstances you’re facing–no matter how hungry or weak.

Prayer Starter

Lord, I thank You that You give me grace when I complain and mercy when I do wrong, and I praise You for everything You’ve given me. Today, I’m praying that you would strengthen my spirit and body to make a joyful noise to You–to praise You–even when I’m at my weakest physically. Give me the ability to praise before my battles because I know that You’re fighting for me! In Jesus’ name, amen!
