The LORD is my light and my salvation–whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life–of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 27:1 (NIV)

Anxiety is something we all face at some point in our lives; and it’s something that can have any combination of many different causes. The Webster’s defines anxiety as “apprehensive uneasiness or nervousness usually over an impending or anticipated ill.” Worry becomes anxiety, and anxiety becomes fear. Yet the psalmist highlights an immutable truth here–with God, we have nothing to fear!

Are you fearful, nervous, or anxious about anything right now? Guess what–you don’t have to be. God’s got your back. Is the enemy continually coming against you? “When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.” (Ps. 27:2 (NIV)) So here we see that not only is God our stronghold, our “light and [our] salvation,” but He also makes our enemies stumble over themselves trying to get to us. And did you notice it said “to devour me?” Here they are coming to eat you, but you’ve got a secret weapon! You’ve been fasting and praying for a week already, foregoing “devouring” anything to make a sacrifice to God. They should be running from you!

Today, this year, if you’re anxious about anything, if you’re fearful, remember that God is on your side so you get to dwell under His protection:

4 One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life… 5 For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.

Psalm 27:4a,5 (NIV)

Prayer Starter

Heavenly Father, I thank You that provide shelter and that I can dwell in Your house the rest of my life. I praise You for bringing through things already. As I’m facing down this enemy and entering this tough trial, I pray that You would once again show Your might in protecting me–as David said in Psalm 27, even if war breaks out against me, I’m confident in You. I pray God that You would continue to keep me safe from my enemy, who is Your enemy too. Thank You, Lord for already doing it! In Jesus’ name, amen.
